What's Up on the Wooldown? |
| Posted: Jun 02 2009 >> Back |
Looe has a lot going for it.
The coastline, beach, river, local woodlands and countryside make Looe an area unmatched by almost all others in Cornwall.
Take Newquay for example. They have some lovely beaches and good waves for surfing but apart from that they have nothing to rival Looe when it comes to Cornish architectural character married with picturesque natural beauty. Okay they have an airport but let's face it, would you want one of those on your doorstep!
How about Truro then? I really like Truro. It's busy, bustling and full of contemporary attractions which dispel the stereotypical image of Cornwall being full of country bumpkins! Truro is large though and as such can't compete with Looe's small and intimate atmosphere.
Okay, let's go a little further, how about St Ives and Padstow. Both great little towns and I would say on a par with Looe when it comes to tourist attraction but they still don't have the visual aesthetic that Looe has. Different maybe, but not the same.
Basically, Looe is in a league of its own.
So what's my point?
My point is that you and I are lucky and we are also quite similar!
Why? Well, simply because we choose to live and spend the precious time we have on this earth in Looe.
We call it home. A place we return to, a place where our families live and grow up. Somewhere where our children can experience what it's like to live in a friendly and caring environment.
So not only is Looe great to look at, it's the people that make it special - you and I.
So What's Up on the Wooldown?
I don't like damaging confrontation whipped up by people with an agenda.
So it saddens me to see our local newspaper whipping up a 'micro-media' frenzy around the ideas and suggestions brought up for the Wooldown by the Mums of Looe.
It's so divisive and damaging to a small and friendly community for people and businesses to be pitching the them against us mentality in order to sell more of their ideas or products.
The idea that the residents living near or the people who use the Wooldown are in anyway different to the Mums of Looe is preposterous and this 'up-in-arms' atmosphere which is slowly brewing should be stopped immediately.
I am not one to shy away from having an opinion and although yet to be convinced about the proposals for a play area on the Wooldown I am always open to new ideas and suggestions that add to the local facilities for our community.
Living in East Looe I use the Wooldown throughout the year. I take friends and visitors up there, we have picnics up there and enjoy spending quite moments just looking at the view when the town and beach are busy.
It's a wonderful place and somewhere that should be of benefit to the whole town whether they are walking their dog or exercising their children!
Dog Poo!
I know, nobody wants to read the word POO, just reading the word feels disgusting!
Never-the-less the Wooldown and other areas or Looe suffer from it. It has been estimated that the 7.3 million dogs in Britain produce an average of 1,000 tonnes of Poo a day some of which is on the Wooldown. It's foul, disgusting and dangerous especially where children are concerned.
If the Wooldown is for everyone to enjoy, we as a community need to resolve this problem. Dog Poo can lead to blindness in humans (Toxocariasis) - especially children who tend to play on the grass.
Litter
I hate litter and I dislike people when they drop it.
Litter bugs, as they used to be called, are lazy individuals and the Wooldown suffers from these people too. In-fact many parts of Looe do. Sometimes I think Shutta Road should be renamed Gutta Road after the bin men have been!
So here is another problem we all need to deal with and not fight each other about. We're all in the same boat so-to-speak and together we can make a difference. Arguing and infighting will do nobody any good.
The Mums of Looe have already made a start on clearing up the Wooldown and good for them I say. They're getting together and making a difference. Maybe the other Wooldown users will do so too.

| It is disgusting with what is happening with the Wooldown, people like the mums should be rewarded for all the hard work they do not, treated in this way. It is the mums that care about the Wooldown not these other individuals. Leave the mums alone! They are doing a great job. They are there for the whole community. Admin comment: Quite right, but my point is that we should be working together and not mud slinging which is what seems to be happening. Both the Mums of Looe and the Wooldown Group should be encouraged in their endeavours and the outcome that is voted on by the majority followed through. It's quite obvious that both groups care passionately about the Wooldown so let's make it a better place for everyone by working together. |

| Dogs and children can play together | By Unknown on Jun 21 2009 at 8:02 PM |
| As a mother of 3 children who love taking their dog for a walk, I'm disappointed that we may be forced to leave the dog behind if we go to the Wooldown. I understand most cases of Toxicariasis occur in people who work in kennels and not in children who play in the park. |

| Who said that dogs will not be allowed on the Wooldown? I don't believe that this is something anyone wants. | |

| I have 3 kids and 3 dogs and I am a mums of Looe member! Did you know that most of the mums of Looe are dog walkers on the Wooldown!!! So I would say that this would speak for it's self, Dogs will never be banned from the Wooldown what nonsense to think that this would ever happen. | |
