Looe Raft Race 2010 – Day 19

The Looe Daily Photo Day 19Okay, I know this photo of the Looe Raft Race is way out of date but I haven’t uploaded any of the pictures yet so thought I might tell you about it now.

The raft race was held for many years until eventually stopped due to health and safety regulations – so I’ve been told. Needless to say the good and the great in managed to overcome these difficulties and reinstated the event during the Festival by the Sea last year.

I didn’t manage to get down to the start but I did take some photos from our house, of contestants rowing their way up river and eventually being towed back again! It looked great fun although some teams were clearly exhausted and struggling with their rafts!

The raft race was co-organised by Looe Boat Owners Association and Looe RNLI with the aim of raising funds towards the £31,000 needed to replace the old Looe D class inshore lifeboat. I can report that the RNLI were successful and took ownership of the new lifeboat last year and I will write more and add picture on that in another post.

The raft race in 2011

If you want to come an see the crazy antics that go on during the raft race, the event starts at 1.30pm on Saturday Sunday 10 July on the main East Looe beach.

The Banjo Pier, along the East Looe Quay or bridge are great places to watch the teams as they paddle like crazy with the tide to the Millpool car park slipway. Last year some were towed back to the start by the lifeboat crew where there was an award ceremony, so do go until you’ve seen it all. It promises to be a fun day out if you can make it.
