Pengelly’s Fishmongers – LDP – day 8

The Looe Daily Photo Day 8This morning I spent an hour or so talking to a couple of businesses in Looe. One about their website (which I’m designing) and the other about fish and the ‘Day Caught Fish’ they specialise in.

Everyone who has visited Looe will know that it’s a working Cornish fishing town. Sure we have a few holiday cottages here and there, some great independent shops and fabulous cafés, restaurants and pubs but the general ‘vista’ of the town is dominated by the fishing trade and the working harbour.

Looe is a “real” place, not just a beachside holiday village full of holiday lets. When all our illustrious visitors go home after a relaxing break in Looe, the town is still alive with people working and supplying local services to local people.

One of these businesses is Pengelly’s Fishmongers in East Looe

Tucked away off the main street, Pengelly’s have been selling fish since 1946. If you’re coming to Looe you should go check them out – say hi from ilovelooe!

The shop is now run by Angie and Jackie who took over in 2000 and they stock a range of gourmet delicatessen products as well as the ‘day caught fish’ for which they are renowned. All the fish are local fish bought from the Looe Fish Market (apart from the Salmon) so you can be assured the the fish has been caught locally and not shipped in from around the world! Availability varies from day to day depending on weather and the tides etc so you should call in advance if you want something in particular.

Here is a list of some of the fish that they get hold of:

  • Dover Sole
  • Cod
  • John Dory
  • Mackerel
  • Haddock
  • Pollock
  • Lemon Sole
  • Brill
  • Herring
  • Squid
  • Red Mullet
  • Plaice
  • Sardines
  • Pilchard
  • Dabs
  • Skate
  • Cuttlefish
  • Whiting
  • Brill
  • Turbot
  • Gurnard
  • Sea Bass
  • Hake
  • Ling
  • Salmon
  • Megrim Sole
  • Rainbow Trout – freshwater
  • Rock

Anyway, here are a couple of pictures I took this morning. Thank you ladies for letting me take the pictures.

As always, please leave a comment below. Cheers. Chris.
